Another Depression Question

Mercy, I'm not at all qualified to answer the questions that you've asked. I wish I could. I can tell you that over the last two weeks, I've felt really down. I've been fighting through it and I'll laugh and clown around. But, I find myself really out of it, feeling just down in the dumps, and not wanting to deal with things I normally dealt with and my energy level is down. I have been treated for anxiety even before my quit. But I've noticed a changed in me over the last two weeks. I'm watching it closely and if I don't pull out of it, you bet I'll be seeing my doctor. What helps me more than anything is to stay busy. This site is great but if you sit, sit, and sit in front of the computer, you're not getting anything else done. Then you turn around and you have a mountain of things that you've neglected. That can add to your depression. I know I feel more down in the dumps if I'm not staying active, keeping my mind focused, and taking care of business. So, I have to balance my time. I know SSC wants us to come here for support and encouragment but, they have always encouraged us to stay active as well. Mercy: Here is something I wrote in the beginning of my quit...I will send it along to you now, as it might srike a chord with you and let you know that you really are not alone... Smoking has been a part of me for a long long time. And make no mistake; I have been its willing companion. An amazing magician is this substance. When I was hurt it told me everything would be alright as long as I didn't actually feel the pain. And I believed it. And I never learned to grieve. When I got angry it told me everything would be alright as long as I didn't defend myself. And I believed it. And I never learned to communicate. When I was afraid, it told me everything would be alright as long as I never tasted the fear. And I believed it. And I never learned to cope. When I was happy, it convinced me it was my friend as long as I took it to the party. And I believed it. And I never felt total joy. Stay strong in your resolve... nonic My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 104 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,511 Amount Saved: $728 Life Gained: Days: 19 Hrs: 10 Mins: 35 Seconds: 54

mercy You are not alone in wondering about this effect of the quit process. Sadly I don't feel that I am qualified to give you answers on the subject. I can only tell you that you are not alone. I too ( and I suspect many others) suffer the same situation. For years, I masked depression with smoke and am now working through the mental landscape as it where...Perhaps you should see a professional if you feel that the symptoms you are experiencing are endangering your well being...I see a shrink every other week for just this malady and struggle on a daily basis to remain in a place of hope and tranquility...It is not easy, but we must in one way or another adapt and create a better self then we have had as addicts... I understand nonic My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 104 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,511 Amount Saved: $728 Life Gained: Days: 19 Hrs: 10 Mins: 31 Seconds: 18

No need to rush with an answer. Enjoy your day. If you develope depression...(even a pretty sad depression) will it go away? I read somewhere on this board that your brain chemistry is off for as long as 7 months. So if I hang in there..... will the depression subside?.... or level off? Is the depression caused by a new imbalance in the brain? Also.... if anyone has developed depression and is not for taking anti-depressants.... have they had any success with St Johns Wort? I'd sure appreciate information when you have time.
