How Did Ya Do It?

Hi MamaG, Lookingglass has it right on the money! I learned that for myself on this quit right now. Close the door on smoking and don't ever look back, set it in your mind that "This is it, there is no going back" and you will find it to be better, and as he so eloquently put it, there may still be a bad day or two. You can make this quit as hard or as easy as you wish. It it all up to you! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 64 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,608 Amount Saved: $675.2 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 18 Mins: 30 Seconds: 49

I went cold turkey, but you'll find people here who have done it every which way and been successful. Whatever works for you works. I don't think there really is an "easy" way for most of us, but I do think it's best if you regard quitting as regaining something (your health, freedom from addiction) rather than giving something up. The nicodemon is persistent, wily and sneaky. Clobber him every chance you get and you will be a winner. Welcome, Mama g. I don't know that there's any easy way to quit smoking. Quitting is tough. It takes time, and it certainly takes the willingness to walk through the fire. I've used the patch on both my quit attempts. The first time for 3 months, and this time for a couple of weeks... before abandoning it. The patch made the first little while easier in terms of physical withdrawal. On the other hand, I ended up going through physical withdrawal for a long time... just to a lesser degree. This time I ended up getting off the patch because it was causing me to have heart palpitations, and the result was that I got through the physical withdrawal much more quickly. But the physical withdrawal, in many ways, isn't the worst of it. The psychological withdrawal is very challenging for most people, and it can take several months to resolve. The 'trick' to quitting is a good attitude. A determination to succeed no matter how great the discomfort, no matter how long the process. If the door is closed, if smoking isn't an option no matter what happens... then you'll probably find that there's not as much discomfort as there would be if your quit is "conditional". Those who determine to stay quit... "unless it gets too bad"... usually go back smoking. Keeping that door open just a crack... actually 'causes' the withdrawal to get worse. Whatever method you use... patch, chantix, etc.... know that there's no magic bullet. Quitting is going to be a challenge that you'll have to take a day at a time (or a few minutes at a time, sometimes)... and while you will have good days, you'll also have a lot of bad days. And the process will likely last quite a while before you're really comfortable as a non-smoker. There are exceptions, but not many, and you can't count on being one of them. If your attitude is "no matter what", the pain of making this core change will be minimal. That I truly believe. Good luck! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/6/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 63 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,583 Amount Saved: $582.75 Life Gained: Days: 10 Hrs: 7 Mins: 47 Seconds: 3

Hello and welcome to the site! I quit using patches - did the whole course (10 weeks) and have now been completely nicotine free for three days. I personally found them a life-saver, I couldn't have quit without them. The only thing I found was I was using the 24 hour patch but had to take them off at night because the dreams were well wierd!! I had no problems stepping down the strengths either and haven't noticed any particular differences since I finished the course. I wish you luck - let us know how you get on. Hello All. Great Site! (I'll be here awhile) ;) So I was wondering who went cold turkey, used a NRT or perscription drugs? I'm going to use the patch after an unsuccessful attempt at cold turkey... Any thoughts and experience in all areas are much appreciated! Thanks! Hi MamaG, How is your quit going today? You asked how we quit, for me, I went cold turkey and broke my right leg. It worked!!! Couldn't step outside for a smoke so I just quit. It actually sounds easier than it was, but at least it worked. I'm on the east coast, somewhere... hehehe. Smokes usually run me about $3.50 a pack. BLAH. When I quit a few weeks ago, I bought about 40 hedges with the cash I usually spent on smokes. They are most certainly better looking than ciggy butts all over the yard. Here's to a long and wonderful smoke-free life... CHEERS. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/11/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 0 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 0 Amount Saved: $0 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 0 Mins: 0 Seconds: 0

Atta Girl MaMa G. The patches are working for me and I,m a 50+ year smoker?? Best advice I can give follow the program step by step no short cuts. I don,t know what part of the country you live in or how expensive they are but it,s cheaper than smoking and they will get you through the tough part. Best of luck. Why yes, I am ready. I'm going to get up early and head out to get me some patches too. :p I'm going into this with a good attitude and knowing that I will be okay in the end because not having a smoke will not kill me, it's smoking them that will. I have considered using the first step of patches for 6 weeks and then step down until completely off. Although I'll be paying for them myself, it'll still be cheaper than what it is for me to actually smoke. I'm looking forward to my first Summer smoke-free in 17 years. As I type that out, it's so unbelievable that I have smoked for so long. NOT ANYMORE! I'm Done. For Good.
