Changing the channel requires will, which is difficult to execute, if your mood isn't what you want it to be. Also, There's inertia, which can cause you to remain at the same place, instead of pushing outside your comfort zone.

To use that analogy of sitting slumped on a couch while watching tv with a tv converter, it's easier to play with the converter than do something different, and life-changing.

Okay I am going to disagree with this quote too. I do not believe you have absolute control over your thoughts. You do have control but sometimes it is a fight.

Paul is talking about normal everyday thoughts and I know that if you start the day positive you have a good chance of ending it positive. But this does not take into account thoughts that come with an anxiety disorder or thoughts that are built on a core belief. Especially if you are not aware that the core belief is controlling you. It does help immensely if you try to think positive all the time and it will in time take the control from the core belief and replace (bury) it with a positive one. But this takes time and the negative one is still there. Peeking at it gives it power and undoes all the positive.

Feel free to disagree with me, this is just my point of view.

One analogy I liked from a relaxation book by a sports psychologist stated that our minds like a television, giving us the option to change the channel if we didn't like the channel(thought).
