Medications

To BBBM - Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my question. I really needed to know there was at least one person out there with whom I can relate. I have been thinking of Paxil too, but as yet a too afraid to try. I know I can't give up, feel like I can't take any more of the "big PANIC attacks" and the exposure training are causing them to happen more frequently. I've prayed solidly for them to go away or to somehow become stronger. A friend last night suggested praying for the willingness to be willing to continue trying which I hadn't thought of before. Sounds like a good idea to me. Again, thanks for responding, good luck and if you don't mind, let me know how you are coming along.

Repply to Whisper : I am not on any medication at all. My experience has been similar to yours. Side effects, withdrawal effects etc. etc. have been too painful; and the reality for me it has been that the panick attacks/sintoms have been there with or without medication. I still question in my mind if I should try "Paxil ", but I don't think I will. For now Relaxation and breathing exercises along with CBT therapy are helping a lot....... and if you are a "Believer"........ PRAY A LOT........it works !!!

Hello. I'm wondering if there is anyone out there who has gotten better without the use of medication? I have had so many bad experiences with medications that over time, I have developed a strong fear of taking medication (to the point that I simply will not take it regardless of circumstance. I guess I am also thinking that those of you who are taking medication must still be having panic or anxiety or I assume you would not be here. I feel like I have placed myself in a box that I can't get out of because I won't attempt any more medications and because I cannot seem to overcome my anxiety about leaving the house. I make a step forward and three back, and am feeling pretty hopeless today. Sorry for the negativity but that's kind of where I am right now. Thanks for listening.

I would give the advice to 'research' any drug you are curious about or you have been prescribed. You can even tell your Doctor you intend to 'research' the drug/drugs he thinks is best for you. The Internet is a good place to get common knowledge about a myriad of drugs that are prescribed everyday. There are also books you can look for and, of course, ask your Pharmacists. They really do know allot about drugs and are usually more than happy to consult with you. There are so many drugs out there on the market - how can a Doctor know them all and 'all' the side effects that they will have on their various patients. It is no fun playing russian roulette with some of these drugs - it is easy for the Doctor to listen to his rep or read something in one of the journals he reads - but, I think 'we' have to be the final judge - after all, we are ingesting them into 'our' bodies, they aren't. If you have questions about a drug, 'research' it. You will find in quite revealing. Also, your Doctor will more than likely appreciate your input - working 'with' your Doctor can help his diagnosis be more accurate. Maria

Hi Shannon, I think it is always hard to find that happy medium with medication. I am on Effexor XR 150 mg and I was very lucky that it was the right one for me. The side effects of course for the first two weeks were terrible but once I rode though the side effects life became much more bearable. I don't think medication alone works for long periods of time though. I think it is important to figure out what is causing the panic and work on that as well. I would go back to the Doctor's to make sure that what you are on is working for you (dosage). Or maybe you just need a different medication. Good luck! Michelle :)

I am on Clonazepam, 1mg twice a day (2mg per day)and I still have severe panic attacks. Should the amount be increased, or am I going to get that, "No more, you might be an addict look"

I am on Remeron and haven't really had any side effects to it. I was on Pamelor, i belive it is an orlder depression medication. It would also had a side-effect of weight gain, but it didn't affect me. I am one of those people that some hate, I can eat 10 pounds of food and not gain a pound. So I guess I am stick being skinny, I am sure its just my genitics. Luke

Sleep promotion (hence take at bedtime-can be seen as a positive side effect) & appetite stimulation/weight gain are the most common side effects of Remeron/mirtazapine. SSRIs like Paxil tend to cause significantly more sexual dysfunction, insomnia & nausea but the weight gain from SSRIs tends to take 6-12 months as opposed to the first month as seen with Remeron/mirtazapine. Hi ! I'am new to this support group. I also suffer from panic attacks and generalized anxiety. I've been off work now for 1 month and my doctor just gave me another month off. She also gave me a prescription for Remeron-30mg that I should take before going to bed. I'am just wondering if anyone out there is taking this medication for panic attacks and anxiety related problems and what are the most common side effects?
