I have to say attitude and being prepared are everything. It's like that fine line between love and hate. It's an emotionally charged addiction, so what we feel will influence it, but before we feel anything we have to think it. If I tell myself this is a cake walk(it isn't) and run against a rough patch I won't win. If I tell myself sure this is hard but it's way possible like taking a math test that you prepared for then sure I'll do better. If I am up front on what I am thinking acknowledge it and then change it, I can get positive real quick. I have to stay tuned in though, observant of my thoughts. I wont get delusional thinking this is oh so easy, but realistically come on, NOT SMOKING WONT KILL ME, SMOKING WILL. So I avoid that game of just one maybe just a puff. It's all or nothing for me on this one. Embrace the journey it is a great change and even great fantastic changes take time to get use to. Bumping for all but new quitters especially. State of mind at the commencement of a quit is instrumental in determining the nature of that quit. I agree with Rusty, positive thinking is key to a less challenging experience. The first AND second time I quit... there was no sailing! It was horrendous.. awlful, wanted to pull my skin off kind of feeling. Yes, that graphic... This time for some reason, it's just not there. I breathe in deep and I can actually feel my lungs - I went for a walk today which turned into a half run/half walk, because I could! I'm just so elated about the possiblities of not smoking, the withdrawl things haven't really bothered me. I also have the Short-term satisfaction of getting into the Peace Corps which has been my goal in life for the past 3 years. They do not accept smokers. So, I quit, that dream is more important to me than nasty cigs which I hated anyways. I think that has really helped me through this time around. Everytime I get a craving I tell myself "It's the addiction talking, and I am more than the addiction, I can say NOOOO!!" and it helps. But, yeah, its weird how this time it's so easy... If @ first you don't succeed, try, try again!

My quits have always been weird, If I can make it for 5 days, I've always made it for more than a month, and then some super stressful situation or just major cravings have brought me back. I remember the first time I tried to quit and it was just as easy as putting the cigarettes down (I think I had been smoking less than 18 months at the time) I kick myself for not keeping that one, because it was easy and the only reason I started smoking again was because I wanted to. This quit has been pretty easy for me so far (knock on wood) and I think it's due to a combination of things, first I'm am better mentally prepared to quit then I have ever been. Second I have come to this place and it is quite inspirational to find people facing similar problems. I also set myself up with a good time to quit, I've had an easly 5 days. Finally though I think part of the reason it has been easy for me is I told myself it wouldn't be that hard. I thought back to that first quit and how easy it was then and I try to draw on it. It's kinda amazing, I was hanging out with friends today (who were smoking) and it didn't bother me in the least. I smelled it but didn't want one at all. I also find myself NOT thinking about smoking constantly like I have during previous quits. I spent a lot of time telling myself I could do it, I was finally ready and all that and I think it helped. I have yet to have a majorly stressed moment since I quit, so maybe I'm saying all this a little too soon, but we'll see. I can almost see myself as a non-smoker already

First off, let me state I'll never say quitting is easy, because it's not, but sometimes I wonder if we make it harder for ourselves than it needs to be. We (or at least I) tell ourselves it it extremely hard to quit, Some people make it out to be one of the hardest things you'll ever do. I might just be talking out of my you know what, but isn't this kinda like a self-fulfilling prophecy? If I believe quitting will be extremely hard, it will be. This makes and already difficult task very hard. I don't want to belittle the efforts of anyone here, or anyone that has quit, if it was easy I would have suceeded on one of my numerous other quits, but does anyone else think we could make it a little easier on ourselves if we could talk ourselves into believing it wasn't really that hard to quit?

I have to say, I agree. I was shocked when I wanted to talk about quitting with my shrink and all she would say is, "Decide your not a smoker any more, and you won't be." I did just that, and nothing more and I have to say... this has been the easiest quit I have ever had. Not that I'm not tempted, but I'm simply not giving the negative whining room in my head to take control. Wow, what a difference it makes. The problem with this quit, to me, is that there seems to be no "recipe" for success. Like a recipe for cooking something, two people can have all the exact same, properly measured ingredients and one's cake turns out perfect and the other's falls. There are some basic guidelines, but that's about it. When I started here and did the nicotine dependency assessment, I was an 8/10 versus an average of 3.5 for a man. Is this a reliable indicator of the difficulty of one's quit? Who knows? Maybe it is....it would explain a lot regarding my experience. I will say that it has irritated me that some just seemingly "sail" through this process, while for me it is akin to climbing up a sheer cliff; one hand-hold after another. I've watched people very close to me just throw away the addiction like so much worn out clothes. And then, people like myself struggle with every step...which is very difficult for a person like myself who has found success in so much of life's challenges. No, at least not in my case, this is not a question of making it more difficult than it is. It is this difficult. And that's how it is. :| My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/18/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 69 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,777 Amount Saved: $621 Life Gained: Days: 11 Hrs: 9 Mins: 47 Seconds: 15
