What do MRIs show?

MRIs are the most detailed scans a person can have...better than a ct/cat scan

Thanks for your response, Danielle. :) My family doctor told me about having it done as a check-up that, for all intents and purposes, might give me some relief as to ruling out anything other than anxiety disorder. I eventually did get it done for my mother`s sake and out of my own curiosity, since I usually shake my right hand or foot if panic hits me hard. I was wondering if anxiety disorder shows activity in certain areas of the brain that can be detected in such an exam. The doctor who went over the results of the MRI with me said nothing abnormal showed up in the scans (they were of my neck and head), and if there was a horomone imbalance of some kind affecting my brain, it wouldn`t show up anyway. All in all, I`m not sorry I had it done, but after having gone through it, I`m surprised my family doc. brought it up to me at all. (shrug) Hypochondria is not a phobia I have, anyway (I deal with social phobia and agorophobia). It could be that she comes in contact with patients who deal with that phobia more frequently than others at her clinic, I don`t know.

They can detect all kinds of things from cancer to torn ligaments - stuff that an xray wouldn't see. I had one on my knee. I was glad I did too cause they other tests hadn't shown anything but the MRI picked up the torn miniscus. It's pretty amazing really! Danielle

What are MRIs effective in showing, and what are some common misconceptions about them? Many thanks in advance. :0)
