Working through my first hurdle

Your first major hurdle was a conflagration at the gym?! Are you me?! I had the same scenario but I actually DID pop off. Riotously. Lucky for me I was in the right and it's a gym in my workplace, so I got an apology in the end but the one thing that struck me after the fact and every time I've been angry since in the company of strangers... Not everyone you come across will know that you just quit smoking. So they won't mollycoddle, agree, understand your need to get what you want nowrightnowiwantitnowanddon'tyoudaretellmeican'thaveitnow whodoyouthinkyouareanywaypal? Phew. It's a bumpy ride D, but I guarantee that if you hit those weights, get your heart racing on the treadmill, whatever it takes to work off that angst, you'll soon find the thread that stitches your newly rediscovered emotions together and the cooling elixir that puts out the fire shooting from your eyes when you're annoyed (which you will be many more times) but remember one thing: Non-smokers get annoyed too. Big D Well yes, you have come to the crux of the matter rather quickly and I applaud you for being so self aware. Recognizing what you stated in your post is the beginning of the journey. I too was taken aback in the initial stages to realize how much of my emotional life was beholden to the thin blue smoke. This is not so for all people, however, I have observed that some people do not recognize a connection between the manner in which they control their emotions and the ritualistic nature of smoking. And for them I am very happy because it means that their particular quit involves primarily the physical side of the addiction. For folks like me and apparently you, must work through the emotive side of this as well as the physical. Be very kind to yourself in all of this. Realize that smoking for you has been a kind of psychological safe zone to which you could retreat in times of confrontation, sadness, anger, or any of the other human emotive states we travel through. The good news is that once you begin to practice not smoking (it does take practice). you will develop better ways of coping with the emotional situations that, here to for, have been dispatched by resorting to smoking. One thing I have come to realize is that there is no logic in killing the body in order to avoid experiencing the soul. Good luck to you, and stay close to this site. Big D, Your'll find the changes you deal with aren't just on a physical level....but emotional also. Most of us started to smoke young. We never learned to "deal" well with the emotional aspects of life. We were robbed of the chance to become whole. We just sucked down our emotions with a drug instead of learning how to deal with it constructively and upfront. That's all part of becoming the "new you". As you learn to face life and have a greater repect for yourself you will treasure the fact you don't smoke all the more. Hang in there......your doing great. It continues to get easier. Just like working out. You have to maintain your workout. You can't just work out one time and expect to be buff and in shape. Every day work on your quit. Remind yourself why you quit. Do what is right for your body as it trys to heal from the extensive poisoning. Take it one hour at a time. Don't let others have the power to blow your quit. As you continue on in your quit you'll need to start developing new coping strategies for triggers like stress and anger. It sure does, you need new coping skills. Deep breathing, walking, reading here, whatever it takes. Non-smokers have stressful situations and don't have nic fits, so we just have to retrain ourselves. My quit week was so not ideal in terms of what was going on around me, I posted it somewhere, but DH and I made it through, I didn't hot him over the head with a cast iron skillet, MOm is back in Australia and all is well now.
