I got exactly the same thing from journaling, what a surprise. What an eye opener.

Hugs, what would make you think you have never been part of a group? Because you are different? So what. You are part of this group.

You can not change people, they have to change themselves. They also have to have a reason too. If people expect you to be other than you then there expectations are misplaced. If your expectations are to fill their expectations or change them then your expectations are misplaced. You can not live in two worlds. You have to decide who you are and stick with it. You can live in your world and visit theirs but yours has to be grounded. My apples and oranges analogy. Just be you. You are part of this group. I disagree, the world is not fine, but parts of it certainly are. The world has to many facets no one can live in all of them. That is what makes us individuals. I prefer it that we are all different. Please give journaling a try, I'm sure you will find it a big help. It is proven therapy.

Hi Hugs: Good idea I think. I journaled for awhile when I was sick and it helped get all the fear, anger and despair, out of me. I didn't analyze anything I wrote, just let it all out, it was only for me anyway. Later when I read it again, it was almost as though it was a bad dream, but it really did happen to me. I found a common thread in my journal, maybe you'll find one too which will help you understand yourself better. Good luck.

Hi Hugs: Well, start feeling it, 'cause you are. :-) (part of a group) I have GAD too. Not badly now, but that was my diagnosis when it all started, with some PTSD. I lived in a dysfunctional family which included tragedy. All families are dysfunctional to some degree (no such thing as perfection) but mine was very dysfunctional. That's in the past and I make my own choices now. I am no longer that little girl who needed protection. I can protect that little girl now. It's all part of growing up and maturing eh?

Thanks for making me feel included. Sometimes it appears that one post dismisses the other, and I know I've never felt part of a group, and it's part of the condition of GAD which prevents the cycle of not belonging from ever building a circle.

I also have trouble wondering if I can change people, and their expectations. I think one of the biggest struggles is with my expectations, nothing to do with the world.

The world is fine.

Hugs4u: You are one of us, you belong. Each one has a right to express themselves, their wants, their needs. You have that right too. We just have to be careful not to step on anybody's toes. Why some people find certain things easy and others do not, I don't know. It just is that way sometimes. There are so many reasons; cultural background as Davit suggested, education, illness, home life, the list goes on. So I just accept things as they come because I can never know all the reasons about someone else and focus on my own learning, I figure that's why I'm here and to offer support if I can. My philosphy is I can't change others, I can only change myself - which means my perceptions, attitudes, etc. Hang in there, we need you, keep posting. Keep the faith.

Having celebs change that stigmatization is exactly what I’m talking about! It’s like when homophobia had to be challenged and people came “out of closets”.

I was a in a presitigious university classroom today, where I saw students completing their advanced course, on a campus where I was placed on academic probation. I followed in a night school remedial course in the most basic thing imaginable in the same field, and stared at a page from the students who breezed out their door, and one student even left their blackberry(I have a phone from a convenience store). I couldn’t express myself later in the class, and I think the instructor saw my age difference with the rest of the class, and didn’t wish to embarrass me.

Singing is great, but in a large city, most of that is “performance” related, and it’s not for “fun”, even, if you can believe, in church choirs. The pressure in a church, is that something simple like singing is a “ministry”. I find that I haven’t been able to find a passion, but that did work for a while. I’m going to try to use a couple of courses I’m in, to connect with exposure work.

I’m not good at self-care, so I’ll see if I can balance this slight misunderstanding and guilt creeping in from my request about posting...I have to find a very large rock to crawl under, I’m afraid. Unfortunately, I’ve been hiding all my life. That’s what this condition can do to us, if we let us.

I can run, but I can’t hide.

This is why I use too many commas, so my meaning is clear, otherwise sentences can mean other things and we have enough trouble as it is.

My friend Greg brought to mind just how different we are. He has different likes and concepts.

He is European and sees things different from me, based on his upbringing. Only thing we have in common is that I make wine like his mother used to. So I let him help himself to my cellar. I can't drink it anyway. (antibiotics)

I think the forums is a place for information mostly. A person can use it or discard it depending on it's relevancy. I think CBT in itself is simple, it is how you use it in your specific case that can make it seem different. What works for one doesn't always work for another but still the concept is the same it is only the process that is different.

I also think the forums are a place to vent and to go to for support. It is the closest to group therapy we can get.

An example: one person may find music relaxing another may find it annoying and prefer quiet. The concept of relaxation to lesson anxiety is the same but the process is different.

The bottom line is take what ever works and still falls within the guide lines of the program and a person will get better.

I thought you were speaking of celebrities not having supports, not the history of the illness, which is getting more accepted.

Celebrities have popularized getting help, and placed their lives in our television viewing rooms through reality shows. The ordinary guy will have followed them to admit we need help, I think, just like wearing their sunglasses, hair, makeup & clothes and movie credits.

Sometimes I can't grasp what you're saying, because everything runs into each other. That's why I suggested paragraphs, which separate a progress of thought, from an introduction, body and conclusion in the other forum.

First off In President Abe's time people like us were locked up and the keys thrown away. I'm 60 years old but it was not till the spread of information mostly by way of the internet that things like CBT became known. It certainly was not available when I needed it the most. 30 years ago Doctors were still prescribing medication only. Even though how to treat it was known over a hundred years ago. (one of Ashley's posts) Before Benzo's, Phenobarbital was given and before that Laudanum which is just another name for opium.

I was given Phenobarbital as a kid in grade three. I was given Valium in my twenties. and Trimipramine a few times after I was thirty. No one suggested that my problem might be a core belief, no one said it could be cured. For me and a great many people there was no help. We became hermits or recluses hiding from a problem we did not understand.
